You'll have more fun that way, and anything you unlock as you play is just a bonus! (Of course, you could find the grind fun too! Everyone's different) My advice, don't sweat the grind so much. But if you are doing something you love, the grind won't even cross your mind. If you aren't having fun, it's gunna feel like a chore. Games should be first and foremost, fun to play. (A goal I finally accomplished this year! I've since turned my attention to jets and tanks) You could also find a particular plane or tank or specific Battle Rating range and play those. For instance, my goal when I started playing, was to spade every prop plane in the game. Personally, I believe that in order to get the most out of Warthunder, you need to set a goal for yourself, or find something you really enjoy about it. (And skill I suppose) Don't let that discourage you though. Your progress is limited by how much time you are willing/able to put in. For those players like yourself who have other things or responsibilities to keep them busy, games like Warthunder will feel like a real challenge because of the nature of the game's structure. While I do play other games on the side, the total play time pales in comparison to Warthunder as I've decided that it's my primary form of entertainment. I've sunk thousands of hours into the game over my five year tenure. Not because I feel obligated to mind you, but because I enjoy the game. Most of my free gaming time is spent playing Warthunder. Part of the experience is the journey, whether it be working towards a vehicle you really want, or grinding out and fully upgrading a specific vehicle. That's just the nature of these types of games. They'll keep doing that until the game is no longer profitable. Every new expansion they add, increases the level cap, adds new content, etc. I've unlocked, purchased and spaded every single thing in the game" since the developers will be constantly pushing the goal posts back by adding new content. My point here is that you'll never reach a point where you go: "Huh. (New vehicles, game modes, etc.) Gaijin makes their money and keeps the game afloat by selling things like premium time, or vehicles, which are designed to speed up and ease your progress. New things are added constantly to keep older players with something to do. In order to keep you playing, the game is structured so that it takes significant time to progress. You need to bear in mind this is a free to play game. This game is a major time investment! If you want to make progress without springing for premium, this will be pretty much the only game you play. Warthunder isn't a game that you pick up over the weekend, and by next week you are flying/driving top tier vehicles and competing with the best players on an equal footing. I have not played it during the time I have had premium account, but I have used many RP boosters while flying it. Even though I don't play jets almost at all, I decided to spade my MiG-15bis. Personally the thing I really wonder is why unlocking the plane upgrades have to take so much time on rank 4-5. On tank side I cannot make any guesses how long things can take. And if you ment top dog planes, you will have to add even more hours. If you ment the moment you get your first rank 5 plane, well add some hours to that. And I bet 40-50 playtime is very doable on the more demanding plane tech trees. At least with some of the nations when you optimise researching as much as possible. If "get to tier 5" means the moment when you can start researching Rank 5 vehicles on one nation (=at least 6 rank 4 vehicles bought) I'dd say that it is possible in slightly under 30 hours of playing (in airplane side). Im just wondering how much does it actually take to get to tier 5 without any real life money. It just gets boring to play the same tanks and planes for like 20 battles until i can buy an another plane. I love it to bits and i have alot of fun playing it. Im not bashing the game in any shape or form. But still im wondering how far did all of you free2play gamers get in wt. Im currently researching a tier 4 on the american plane tree and very close to one in the british tree. I mean i have alot of tier 3s on the british planes, american planes and tanks, german planes and tier 2 german and british tanks. Which is not alot and i did focus on all trees (except japan) but i still didnt reach tier 4. I actively played it for around 1 (over the course of many years obviously) year in total. I started playing the game from the beta. Its so time consuming and if i want to get up to tier 5 in less than a year i gotta play like 5h daily. For example i did spend a little bit of money 5$ and it did help me get one tank but its insane how much rp is needed to progress through the lines.
